The Serb will fight for the title against Tsitsipas
Swiatek et Jabeur, WTA super final for Le Italico.
PARIS, May 14 (Benin News) –
Serbian tennis player Novak Djokovic beat Norwegian Casper Ruud (6-4, 6-3) on Saturday to reach the final of the Rome tournament and the 1000th victory of his career. He will face Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas, who beat German Alexander Zverev (4-6, 6-3, 6-3).
Five-time champion Nole will play his 12th final in Rome, the fourth in a row, and became the fifth player in the Open Era with 1,000 wins, alongside Jimmy Connors, Roger Federer, Ivan Lendl and Rafael Nadal. The Serb, closer and closer to his best version, leaves no option to his rival despite the resistance of the Norwegian.
After his final in Belgrade, Djokovic aspires this Sunday to his first title in 2022, a season towards which he flies after the blow of the expulsion of Australia. The Serb, who will be number one for the defense of Roland Garros, will try to extend his Masters 1000 record with his 38th title against Tsitsipas.
It will be last year’s final in Paris, with Tsitsipas losing his third consecutive match on clay to Zverev. The German won in Madrid and lost in Monte Carlo to the eventual champion, a player the Greek has won 31 times this year, more than anyone.
The WTA 1000 tournament final will also feature an all-Polish final between number one Iga Swiatek and Ons Jabeur. The Pole beat (6-2, 6-1) Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka in a 27-game winning streak in search of her fifth consecutive title. The Tunisian, recent champion in Madrid, saved a match point against the Russian Daria Kasatkina (6-4, 1-6, 7-5).
