Actor Ignacy Gogolewski, unforgettable in his role, Antek Boryna from “Chłopów”, died at the age of 90, not only a theater and film actor, but also a director and screenwriter, a knight of the Commander’s Cross with the Star of the Order of Polonia Restituta for his stage achievements. “Goodbye, thank you for everything” – wrote Krystyna Janda in social media.

Ignacy Gogolewski performed at the Polish, Dramatic, Contemporary and National Theater in Warsaw. He managed the Stanisław Wyspiański Silesian Theater in Katowice, the Juliusz Osterwa Theater in Lublin and the Rozmaitości Theater in Warsaw.

“Ignacy Gogolewski passed away this morning. Farewell, thank you for everything,” wrote Janda on the Internet. The information about Gogolewski’s death was also confirmed in an interview with PAP by Janusz Majcherek from the Polish Theater.

Ignacy Gogolewski – his roles, stage career, achievements
Ignacy Gogolewski could pride himself on enormous acting achievements. He first attracted attention with the role of Gustaw-Konrad in the first post-WWII “Forefathers”, staged by Aleksander Bardini. Critics wrote then that “he flashed with outstanding talent and mastery of the technique”, “he charmed the audience with his personality and beautifully presented poem”.

The young actor was considered a continuator of the tradition of romantic theater and for many years he was regarded as such. He has played, among others, the roles of Konrad, Kordian, Fantazy.

“If I continued the same type of roles, I would probably get bored with both the critics and the audience. But when the opportunity arises, I am happy to use crop rotation” – assured Gogolewski in one of the interviews.

He has played a lot in Shakespearean dramas, including “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”, “Macbeth”, “King Richard II”, “Julius Caesar”, “Othello”, “Antony and Cleopatra”.

At the National Theater, he has performed in contemporary repertoire – “Operetta” directed by Jerzy Grzegorzewski, “The Last One” by Tadeusz Bradecki or “Na czworakach” by Kazimierz Kutz.

“I’m not saying that romanticism has died out in me. I just had to add a bit of rationalism to it, without which it is impossible to navigate in the modern world” – said the actor. After the success of “Operetta”, Grzegorzewski told him: “Mr. Inku, we must follow the blow” and informed that Kutz wanted to cast him as Laurent.

“Kutz himself described my appearance at the National Theater quite bluntly: ‘We took out Gogolewski’s krupniok, fried it and now it’s quite eatable,’ he said.

Unforgettable Boryna from “Chłopów”
Gogolewski was born on June 17, 1931 in Ciechanów. In 1953 he graduated from the acting department of the State Drama School in Warsaw and soon joined the Polish Theater in Warsaw. “There I met a whole galaxy of outstanding people. All of them together constituted an academy of professional skills, laws and rules, most often unwritten, but without these rules today’s theater would not start,” he recalled.

Movie roles constitute a separate chapter of his professional work. He has performed in Jerzy Zarzycki’s “Soldier of the Queen of Madagascar”, Stanisław Różewicz’s “Troubled Love”, Jerzy Antczak’s “Countess Cosel”, and Janusz Morgenstern’s “Jownie”. The most deeply remembered, however, is by viewers as Antek Boryna from the TV series “Chłopi” by Jan Rybkowski.

In 2005-2006, Gogolewski was the president of ZASP.

Gogolewski is the laureate of numerous awards and distinctions, including Splendor Splendorów, the Grand Prize of the Festival of the Polish Radio Theater and the Polish Television Theater “Two Theaters”, the Master of Polish Speech. In 2000, he received the Aleksander Zelwerowicz Prize for his portrayal of Szarm in Witold Gombrowicz’s “Operetta” directed by Jerzy Grzegorzewski at the National Theater in Warsaw. He was honored, inter alia, with the Commander’s Cross with the Star of the Order of Polonia Restituta and the Gold Medal for Merit to Culture – Gloria Artis.
