Rocket attacks near Polish border, phosphorus bombs on Azovstal steel factory | NOW

Four rocket attacks were carried out on a military complex in Javoriv in western Ukraine on Sunday. Javoriv is not far from the border with Poland. The Russians also allegedly dropped phosphorus bombs on the Azovstal steel plant in Mariupol.

A commander of the Ukrainian Air Force previously reported that missile strikes had been carried out from the Black Sea on the Lviv region. It was the first air raid siren in the region in about a week. Russia has not confirmed the attacks on the complex in Javoriv. According to the first reports, there were no casualties, but there was material damage.

The Russian Defense Ministry said that in the night from Saturday to Sunday, two command posts and four ammunition depots of the Ukrainian armed forces were hit by air strikes. The ministry said the targets were in the Donetsk region of eastern Ukraine. Also, 150 Ukrainian fighters are said to have been “destroyed” by artillery shelling. Independent sources have not confirmed the Russian reports.

Phosphorus bombs after Ukraine win at Eurovision Song Contest

Russia has reportedly dropped phosphorus bombs at the Azovstal steel plant in Mariupol, Ukraine said. An adviser to the mayor of the port city says this happened after Ukraine won the Eurovision Song Contest. “Hell has come to Earth. To Azovstal,” adviser Petro Andrushchenko wrote on a video of the attack. It also shows artillery fire, but the authenticity of the images could not be independently verified.

The use of phosphor bombs in populated areas is internationally prohibited. Andrushchenko also posted photos of the alleged phosphor bombs with Russian lyrics that seem to indicate a connection with the Song Contest. “Kalusha, as requested! To Azovstal”, a suspected reference to the words of the singer of the winning Kalush Orchestra.

He had asked for help on Saturday evening for the Russian-occupied city and the people trapped on the factory grounds. Ukrainian fighters still hold their ground in the besieged steel factory. There are said to be about a thousand more people, many of whom are injured, according to Ukraine.

Ukraine wants to organize the next Eurovision Song Contest in Mariupol, it is not yet known whether that will actually happen.
