The funeral of Al Jazeera journalist Shireen Abu Akleh has resulted in violent crackdown by Israeli security forces against participants in the ceremony. Images show that officers violently stop the procession or try to push it back. That happens at the head of the procession.
The carriers of the coffin also have to back up. The coffin fell to the ground during the clashes. After some time, the porters withdraw into a building with the coffin. Why the Israelis use violence is not clear at this time.
Abu Akleh was shot dead on Wednesday in the city of Jenin in the occupied West Bank. Eyewitnesses and her employer Al Jazeera say that Israeli soldiers have aimed at her. Israel says she was killed in a gunfire and it is unclear whether she was hit by Israeli soldiers or Palestinians.
Today in Jerusalem is the funeral in a Christian church in the old city. The police intervened when the procession wanted to go to church on foot from a hospital in the city. After the service, Abu Akleh is buried in a nearby cemetery.
