Russia’s gas supplies to Europe via Ukraine have fallen by a third

Moscow, May 12, LETA – AFP. Russia’s gas supplies to Europe via Ukraine fell by a third on Thursday following Kiev’s decision to suspend part of Russian gas transit to Western Europe in the Luhansk region, Russia’s state-controlled gas giant Gazprom reports.

Gazprom told Interfax that Ukraine delivered 50.6 million cubic meters of gas to Ukraine on Thursday, up from 72 million cubic meters on Wednesday.

Ukraine says 53 million cubic meters of gas will be delivered to the country through Europe on Thursday, up from 73 million on Wednesday.

Ukraine said on Tuesday that it was not possible to access a hub in Sohranovka due to the occupation.

Europe has been worried about gas supplies since Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine on 24 February. Many Western European countries want to penalize Russia economically for this invasion, but they have no alternative to Russian gas supplies. By paying for these supplies, they provide financing to Russia.

Since the beginning of the war, there have been fears that Russia could suspend gas supplies to Europe, but so far this has not happened. Much of this supply is provided by the Nord Stream 1 pipeline, which is being built on the Baltic Sea floor.

Under the agreements, up to 109 million cubic meters of gas per day are allowed to transit through Ukraine.
