Early Symptoms of Diabetes Can Feel in the Mouth, Like What?

Dry mouth is also known as xerostomia, a sign of diabetes.

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA – Dry mouth or clinically known as xerostomia is a term used to describe a lack of saliva in the mouth. According to the UK Diabetes organization, people with diabetes are more susceptible to dry mouth and fungal infections such as thrush due to high levels of glucose in their blood and saliva.

Diabetes UK also uncovers several ways to treat and reduce the effects of dry mouth. This includes keeping blood sugar within the recommended range, and making sure the body stays hydrated.

The Cleveland Clinic also notes that dry mouth is a common symptom in people with diabetes who have high blood sugar. Long-term dry mouth with diabetes can lead to health problems, such as gum disease and infections.

“Because dry mouth may be an early symptom of diabetes, it’s important to talk to your doctor about your symptoms and to maintain good oral hygiene,” the Cleveland Clinic says. ExpressWednesday (11/5/2022).

The organization also advises individuals to see a doctor immediately if they experience symptoms such as bleeding from the teeth or mouth, loose teeth, sore mouth, sores in the mouth, difficulty chewing, swallowing, or speaking. Mayo Clinic reminds the importance of recognizing diabetes symptoms as early as possible.

That way, you can get treatment early that can help prevent diabetes complications. Meanwhile, the UK Health Service (NHS) advises seeing a GP if you have any of the symptoms of type 2 diabetes or feel at a higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

“General practitioners can diagnose diabetes with a blood test. So you have to go to your local health center to have it checked,” the NHS said.
