Puppet government” Russia in Kherson plans to make a formal request to the President Vladimir Putin to annex the area from Ukraine.
“There will be a request to make the Kherson region part of the Russian Federation,” Kirill Stremousov, an official in the region already controlled by Russia, said on Wednesday (11/5). AFP.
He later said that Kherson would be fully ruled by Russian law “by the end of this year.”
Russia has indeed controlled parts of Kherson since the invasion began on February 24. After that, they appointed a new pro-Russian government in Kherson.
Kherson is located in northern Crimea, an area of Ukraine that was annexed by Russia in 2014. Kherson is an important region because it supplies water for drinking and irrigation purposes in Crimea.
Russia is also suspected of wanting to undermine the territory of Ukraine. However, when starting the invasion in February, President Vladimir Putin made it clear that he had no intention of occupying his neighboring country.
However, a senior official from Russia’s ruling party said his country was ready to stay in southern Ukraine “forever.”
