Breton and Musk settle their fight in remarkable video: ‘We are on the same wavelength’

US billionaire Elon Musk has assured Internal Market Commissioner Thierry Breton that he intends to make Twitter comply with new European rules on digital services. “I think we’re on the same wavelength,” Musk said in a remarkable video Breton posted on Twitter.

Breton met Musk at a Tesla production site ahead of European-American negotiations for coordinated regulation of the digital industry.

Musk’s decision to take over Twitter had raised concerns in the EU about compliance with rules around disinformation and harmful content. Musk suggested, among other things, that Twitter does not consider freedom of expression high enough, in his opinion.

“Every company that is active in Europe has to follow our rules, it’s that simple,” Breton had said firmly in an interview with the German news agency in April. DPA† Breton referred to the Digital Services Act (DSA), new legislation agreed by European member states and the European Parliament last month that will force internet platforms to remove hate speech and other illegal content more quickly.

Companies that fail to comply with the new regulations face fines of up to 6 percent of their global annual turnover.
