The pandemic is not over yet, but almost all restrictions have been lifted. The tourism industry in Germany is also feeling the fact that most people dare to socialize again.

After the end of the restrictions, tourism in Germany is increasingly working its way out of the Corona low.

The number of overnight stays by travelers in hotels, guesthouses and the like rose by 175.7 percent to 25.1 million in March compared to the lockdown month of the previous year, as the Federal Statistical Office announced on Tuesday. A year earlier, there was a ban on accommodation for private travelers due to the pandemic. However, the level of the pre-crisis month of March 2019 was still almost a quarter (minus 23.7 percent) below.

The number of overnight stays by domestic guests rose by 166.6 percent to 21.8 million compared to the same month last year. The number of overnight stays by travelers from abroad increased by 254.5 percent to 3.3 million. City tourism in particular should benefit from this, which has suffered severely from the economic consequences of the pandemic due to canceled trade fairs and congresses.

The trend towards camping holidays, which are considered low-contact, continued. The number of overnight stays exceeded the pre-crisis level of March 2019 by 39.1 percent. The situation of hotels, inns and guesthouses is still more difficult with minus 28.6 percent compared to March 2019. Accommodation establishments with at least ten beds or ten parking spaces for camping are recorded.
