JAKARTA – Outer space or space is dotted with billions of amazing celestial bodies, some of which are meteors, comets, and asteroids.
Compiled from Mercury News, Tuesday (10/5/2022), as celestial bodies, meteors, comets, and asteroids are certainly not the same and have their own characteristics.
So, what is the difference between meteors, comets, and asteroids? The explanation is below.
Meteor
Meteor is the appearance of the path of a meteoroid falling into Earth’s atmosphere. These events are usually known as meteor showers or shooting stars.
Meteor shower is a phenomenon of light that passes through the sky. The path of light appears due to friction between the Earth’s atmosphere and meteoroids that come from outside the Earth’s atmosphere.
This friction generates heat that destroys the meteoroid and produces heat and light that appear in the form of streaks in the sky.
Comet
Meanwhile, comets are chunks of space objects that contain ice, rock, and debris. The comet’s diameter is several kilometers.
This object also orbits the sun, comet debris is the source of the formation of many meteors in large numbers
Asteroid
Furthermore, asteroids are larger in size than meteors orbiting the sun. Asteroids are formed from rock or metal.
Celestial bodies larger than 10 meters in size are often called asteroids. Usually asteroids consist of grains of sand or large rocks called meteorites.
