A mother gives jogging tips – and explains why her route is particularly suitable

Suse Spanheimer actually does trail running and completes marathons. Since her offspring Joa was born seven months ago, the 33-year-old has been touring with her offspring. Spanheimer’s favorite route for running with a baby is from Würzburg to her place of residence in Randersacker and back.

How many kilometers and meters of altitude does the route have?

When the 33-year-old runs the entire route from Würzburg to Randersacker and back again, she and her seven-month-old son have nine kilometers and ten meters in altitude ahead of them. However, it is also possible to complete the tour in one direction only, which corresponds to 4.5 kilometers on the route from Würzburg to Randersacker and also ten meters in altitude.

Regardless of whether you start the run together from the playground at the Sebastian-Kneipp-Steg in Würzburg or on the beach promenade in Randersacker, both are easily accessible by public transport. And there are also parking spaces, for example, in Randersacker near the Main and in Würzburg on Theodor-Heuss-Damm.

Public transport: With Straba or bus to the starting point in Würzburg or Randersacker

The starting point in Würzburg can be reached with tram lines 1 and 4 in the direction of Sanderau (Arndtstraße stop) or with bus line 554 (Ehehaltenhaus) and a walk of almost one kilometer to the playground at Sebastian-Kneipp-Steg. In Randersacker, the Maingasse bus stop (bus line 554) is about 300 meters away on foot from the alternative starting point at the playground on the beach promenade.

And if you run out of breath or your child doesn’t feel like walking, there are various bus and tram stops within easy walking distance.

Who is the route suitable for?

According to Spanheimer, the route is suitable for runs with prams, but also for runs with children in general. “Actually for everyone,” says the 33-year-old. Because leisure runs, flat units or interval training units are also possible.

Spanheimer uses a three-wheeled children’s bicycle trailer with a baby seat to walk with Joa. “We can use the car as a balance bike and bicycle trailer,” explains the runner, adding that it also “has room for a second child or our pug Wanda.” But even the normal pram is pushed in front of you to walk with the baby. “Everything is possible, the main thing is wheels,” she says with a laugh.

What is the highlight on the route?

And the highlights of the route? For Spanheimer there are a few that are particularly practical for jogging with children. There are playgrounds and benches along the route for breastfeeding breaks in case the offspring gets hungry. If the parents also need something to eat and drink or simply need a moment to “recharge their batteries”, there is a beer garden on the footpath and cycle path on the Main.

Keep-fit devices are available for sporty stopovers on the easy 4.5-kilometre route. Another highlight for Spanheimer is “the bathing opportunities on the Randersacker beach promenade”. As a reward after the effort for young and old you can think about an ice cream there.

How long have you been running with baby Joa, Ms. Spanheimer?

Suse Spanheimer reports that she started running again after eight weeks and in consultation with her doctor. “I haven’t walked alone since I was born, and my son is actually always with me.” The 33-year-old runner also makes it clear: “Of course, this is very individual and different for every runner. Every body, mom and baby, has to find the right time for themselves.”

Where does the route go?

If you start the route at the Sebastian-Kneipp-Steg or the playground below the pedestrian bridge in Würzburg, the path leads through the Mainauen directly on the water below the Sanderau district in the direction of Randersacker. After a good one and a half kilometers you reach the Graf-Luckner-Weiher with opportunities to linger before the path continues to meander along the Main to the south.

Arrived in Randersacker, the path leads past the bathing beach and runs below the state road 2449. After a good 4.5 kilometers, joggers can make a stopover at the keep-fit equipment before crossing the Jakobsbach a little later and starting the way back. The route now runs along the Main again and, after the first five kilometers run, joins the route that is also run on the way there.

What other charms does the route have?

The other charms of the route are actually quite simple: “Depending on your fitness, tiredness or baby mood, the length of the route can be varied,” explains the 33-year-old, adding that you can continue walking along the Main or turn around at any time.

Of course, this is practical when the offspring extend their afternoon nap from swinging the pram and the parents want to enjoy a little more nature and fresh air.

“Sometimes it’s not so easy to find time for yourself in everyday life or to consciously take it. But: if you leave the mountain of laundry behind and try to integrate the sport, then everyone benefits from it”, says Spanheimer. “Fresh air and being outside together connects and is good for mom and child,” she reports on her experiences of jogging together with her son Joa.
