most jobs are open in these sectors

The hospitality and tourism, leisure, culture and sports sectors – which have been hardest hit by the corona measures in recent years – saw the strongest increase in the number of new vacancies in April, with 135 and 134 percent year-on-year respectively. In addition, the metal sector (+105 percent) and the primary sector (+89 percent) are also looking for considerably more workers.

In only three sectors, the number of new vacancies was lower than in April 2021. This concerns services to individuals (-33 percent), other industry (-27 percent) and the wood and furniture industry (-15 percent).

In the last twelve months the total number of new vacancies came to 398,338, more than half more than in the previous year. That number is historically high for the tenth month in a row. The majority of those open jobs – 168,810 – do not require a degree. In April, 13,357 of the 30,627 new vacancies involved such jobs. Highly skilled workers were sought for 11,500 vacancies.

“At the end of April 2022, no fewer than 81,238 vacancies were open in Flanders. A lot of people are working, but there is still a very large group of people who are not yet employed who urgently need to be approached to get the vacancies filled,” responds Flemish Minister of Work, Hilde Crevits (cd&v). “There is still a lot to gain from the inactive, the low-skilled, the elderly and people with a migration background.”
