In the 17th and 18th centuries there was a lively musical exchange between European and Chinese musicians, supported and promoted by the emperors on the dragon throne. It was mostly Jesuits who went east and made contact with the Chinese court. And they brought not only their Christian faith, but also music and instruments. In this way, a considerable collection arose in the forbidden city of Beijing, which was also maintained. Composers and music theorists who made their way to distant China include Diego Pantoja, Teodorico Pedrini and Joseph-Marie Amiot.
