Police detained two people on Saturday afternoon when a small group of the abortion rights solidarity demonstration split off to head to the United States consulate. They wanted to demonstrate in front of the door.

The police speak of an orderly demonstration on Dam Square, but that a group of 20 to 30 demonstrators disturbed public order when they walked towards the consulate. A 27-year-old woman has been arrested for vandalism. She is suspected of having defaced a tram with graffiti. The second, a minor detainee, is suspected of having destroyed an agent’s personal property.
Images on social media show that there is unrest among protesters during the arrests after the intervention of the police. Officers therefore used violence against this group. A man was also allegedly beaten who was carrying a baby on his stomach in a baby carrier.
Irresponsible
A police spokesperson confirmed that the man was indeed beaten on his legs. The spokesperson notes that officers have repeatedly warned the man with the baby that a distance must be kept. “We do not want to use violence against someone who has a child with them, that is paramount,” said the police spokesperson. “We find it worrying and irresponsible that someone who is probably a father behaves in this way towards the police. Colleagues have repeatedly called for them to leave, but they have not responded.”
The man’s partner, who was also present at the demonstration, informed AT5/NH Amsterdam that he did not agree with that lecture. According to her, the man was indeed beaten in the stomach and the police are now talking to him about guilt.
