Long lines at Schiphol again, but crowds are ‘manageable’

The measures taken by Schiphol to prevent chaos appear to be working for the time being. KLM canceled eight outward and return flights this weekend and Transavia, TUI and Corendon moved a total of six departing flights to Rotterdam The Hague Airport.

Long rows

Press agency ANP sees that there are 1 rows in departure hall far beyond the normal poles with waiting ribbons. But airport workers speak of a ‘pretty normal’ crowd or say it’s busy, ‘but still manageable busy’. Security guards and staff at the check-in counters also say that it is still manageable.

For the moment, Schiphol has placed a roof so that people can wait outside before checking in. Bulkheads have also been placed between various departure halls to ensure that passenger flows run smoothly.

The chaos at the airport started two weeks ago due to an unannounced strike by KLM baggage staff. Many flights were delayed or canceled as a result. Schiphol even called on people not to come to the airport anymore.

Flights cancelled

A week later, problems arose again due to a staff shortage at Schiphol. Dozens of flights were then canceled at the airport’s request.

CEO Dick Benschop apologized for the chaos and said he wanted to ensure that the problems did not occur again during the summer holidays. Among other things, the work must be made more attractive, he says in this video:
