Toyen’s painting sold for 28.5 million, Havel’s painting of a horse for three million

The most expensive painting of this avant-garde author at Czech auctions since last April has been the Circus from the 1920s, for which the new owner paid the final price of 79.56 million crowns. It is in second place in the ranking of the most expensive paintings sold at auctions in the Czech Republic, behind the painting Divertimento II by František Kupka, which sold for 90.24 million crowns.

The oil called I See My White Page turns green, which comes from the Parisian period of Toyen, remained in a private collection for a long time. Today it was sold at auction for the first time. Its significance is also evidenced by the fact that the name of the painting was used on the part of this surrealist painter.

Havel’s only painting

Probably the only painting of the former Czech President Václav Havel, created by the acrylic technique on a wooden board, also has a new owner. He paid over three million crowns for a painting from 1982 called The White Horse in Space, including a surcharge. The painting was accompanied by a certificate of authenticity written by Václav Havel, dated March 3, 2011, ie almost 30 years after the work was created and several months before the death of the former president and dissident.

Alfons Mucha’s oil entitled Holiday Portrait from the Second Half of the 1920s was auctioned for 7.26 million crowns. The starting price of the work was five million. Emil Filla Ballet’s large-format oil with flowers from 1947 and 1948 also started at the same price, which sold for a final price of 8.7 million crowns. The painter captured a girlfriend, a soloist of the National Theater.
