John Lee was appointed head of Hong Kong by a committee whose 1,500 members are approved by the Chinese government. He received 99% support. Lee was the only candidate.
On July 1, he will replace the current head of Hong Kong, Kerry Lama, who has run one of the world’s largest financial centers since 2017.
John Lee’s appointment demonstrates Beijing’s desire to consolidate its power over Hong Kong.
