The concert “Amao Omi” premiered on September 3, 2021, receiving the Grand Music Award 2021 in the category “Concert of the Year”. Now, in the spring of 2022, the original message of the concert – to look at the terrible element of war from a safe distance – is no longer valid, because this illusion of security has disappeared.
“It’s extremely scary to see young people my age, young people of my age being destroyed, their families being destroyed, themselves being destroyed. But at the same time, I think this willpower of the Ukrainian people, the willpower of the fatherland patriotism, which I wish to every Latvian – to find a great patriot of the homeland, “says conductor Jurģis Cābulis.
The concert program includes three outstanding composers – ambassadors. The fragile and clear music of Pēteris Vasks will be contrasted with compositions by Giya Kancheli, a composer of the time and thought of the composer, and the Latvian composer Jēkabs Jančevskis. G. Kancheli’s composition “Amao Omi” or “Pointless War” is the central opus of the concert, through which the content branches of the program are formed – meaninglessness and beauty, war and peace, love and light.
The concert program will be supplemented by literary works in accordance with the content branches, which will be revealed in the interpretation and message by the actor of the New Riga Theater Kaspars Znotins. Excerpts from the documentary literature on the war in Afghanistan “Zinc Boys” by the Nobel Prize-winning Belarusian writer Svetlana Alexandrovna Alexievich will permeate the themes of the composition “Nonsense War”.
Outstanding Latvian musicians – Riga Saxophone Quartet, percussionists Ernests Mediņš and Marta Kauliņa, organist Kristīne Adamaite and pianist Ilze Kalniņa – will perform at the concert alongside the Riga Dome Choir School Mixed Choir, conductor Jurģis Cābulis and actor Kaspars Znotins.
Proceeds from ticket sales will be donated to support Ukraine. On the day of the concert, the church will also be able to donate cash in support of Ukraine. Donations will be made through “Ziedot.lv”.
