President Petar Stoyanov (1997-2002) will be awarded the highest honor of the Sofia Municipality – “Honorary Citizen of Sofia”.
At Thursday’s session, municipal councilors will vote on the title. The report states that Stoyanov is “a prominent Bulgarian politician who left a bright mark in our recent history.” He was awarded the title on the occasion of his upcoming 70th anniversary on May 25.
“He is the first candidate for head of state to publicly declare that the goal of his mandate will be Bulgaria’s membership in NATO and the EU, defining it as a” civilizational choice “of the country,” the report said. It is reminded that Stoyanov was the first Bulgarian president after the Second World War who was not a member of the Communist Party. His role in curbing hyperinflation, starting negotiations with the IMF, stabilizing the financial system, preparing for NATO and EU membership, etc. is also emphasized.
“With his overall activity he is an example of high culture and morality, which make him a worthy citizen of Sofia – the city where the lawyer, politician and public figure Petar Stoyanov was formed and last but not least – his home to this day,” the report said. .
SOC will vote for “honorary citizen of Sofia” to become Prof. Mihail Nedelchev – literary historian, publicist, lecturer and former UDF MP.
One of the doyens in Bulgarian theater directing, Asen Shopov, has also been nominated for the highest award in the capital.
