The UN calls for a peaceful solution

The UN Security Council has unanimously adopted a declaration calling for a peaceful solution in Ukraine, several news agencies report.

This means that Russia has not vetoed the declaration, which they could have done, since they are permanent members of the Security Council.

The statement said the Security Council had agreed to express “great concern about the maintenance of peace and security in Ukraine”, writes Reuters.

“The Security Council expresses strong support for the Secretary – General’s efforts to find a peaceful solution,” it added. The Security Council also demanded that Secretary-General Antonio Guterres inform them of the developments “within a reasonable time”.

This is the Security Council’s first statement since the war in Ukraine began.

Shortly after its adoption, Russia vetoed another motion for a resolution. This text condemned the invasion and demanded that Russia’s forces be withdrawn from Ukraine.

According to Reuters, it is the Norwegian and Mexican delegations that have jointly designed the draft that is now being adopted.

Dagbladet has been in contact with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for a comment.

They point out that a press conference, led by Norway’s UN Ambassador Mona Juul, will be held around 9.15 pm Norwegian time – after the declaration has been formally adopted.
