Before the game on Saturday (3:30 p.m.) against Union Berlin, SC Freiburg is fourth in the Bundesliga and has the best chance of qualifying for the Champions League. SWR Sport also spoke exclusively to midfielder Maxi Eggestein about this.
Hard times lie behind Maxi Eggestein. The relegation with Werder Bremen exactly a year ago had hit the midfielder hard and was deeply disappointing. He was trained as a footballer on the Weser, where he not only made it into the Bundesliga, but also knocked on the door of the national team with good performances. It was all the more difficult for him to leave the far north after falling into second division last summer.
Maxi Eggestein and the stroke of luck Freiburg
But now everything has changed for the better. The 25-year-old moved deep south to SC Freiburg. A stroke of luck for him, because here in Breisgau he experiences the sporting contrast program: Reaching the DFB Cup final and well on the way to the Champions League. “Of course it’s much more pleasant,” says Maxi Eggestein happily in an interview with SWR Sport, “unfortunately last year it was about staying in the relegation battle. Of course you’d rather fight to be able to achieve something than to have to prevent something. Of course everything feels this year much better at”.
Champions League? “Just don’t play crazy”
Maxi Eggestein and SC Freiburg are sensationally fourth in the table before the penultimate Bundesliga matchday. As of now, the Breisgauers have the Champions League in their pockets. Milan, Madrid, Manchester – a highly attractive trip to Europe is soon tempting, isn’t it? “Of course that’s nice, and you can also dream a little,” says Maxi Eggestein, “nevertheless we shouldn’t go crazy, but continue to do our best, then the rest will take care of itself”. That should also be the case against Union Berlin on Saturday: “It will be a very exciting game for the spectators”.
Eggestein almost always in the Bundesliga team
Maxi raves about his Freiburg boys, especially the mentality and the team spirit do it to him: “We never give up, even when there are setbacks”. As was the case recently against Mönchengladbach and in Hoffenheim, deficits were made up and points were scored. Eggestein himself is now also a very important cornerstone in the successful Freiburg ensemble. He was involved in 29 of 31 Bundesliga games. Together with Chicco Höfler, the strong ex-Bremer forms a wonderfully harmonious double six.
