Brexit Fund: Flanders receives 223 million euros or 63 percent of the amount reserved for Belgium

According to the distribution key agreed between the various governments, Wallonia receives 29% of the funds allocated to Belgium. This amount amounts to 101 million euros and will be used to finance measures carried out by the employment agency FOREM or the export agency AWEX, among others. Brussels will receive 8 percent from the Brexit fund, ie 29 million euros.

As a coastal and fishing region and the UK’s largest trading partner, Flanders will receive the largest share from the Brexit Fund. The funds will be used to mitigate the impact of the UK’s exit from the EU on economies, including by re-skilling workers, finding alternative export opportunities, assisting with new administrative procedures, etc.

In Flanders, the main concern was that the textile and food industries would suffer if the British left. The Flemish government has entrusted the Flemish Agency for Innovation and Enterprise with the administration of the grants. The 223 million euros will be paid out in four tranches this year and next. The money was primarily to be used to support exports to the UK or to find other export destinations.
