Two consequences relevant to Romania of the war in Ukraine, but which are less discussed. A Romanian MEP calls for EU intervention

He mentioned that both sectors are under pressure and that European tools are needed to support the steps taken by the Romanian authorities.

“The war in Ukraine has put additional pressure on tourism and transport, which are severely affected by the pandemic, for which we need to find solutions. In my country, Romania, on the border with Ukraine, there were significant costs in these two areas. (…) We need more flexibility from the European Commission and additional resources to ensure the necessary transport flows for both Ukraine and the countries of Eastern Europe, on which the resilience and trade stability of the entire Union depend, “he said. MEP Victor Negrescu, according to a press release.

“Foreign tourists scared of what’s happening in the region”

The Romanian MEP highlighted the effects that the war in Ukraine has on tourism and transport and the efforts made by the Romanian authorities.

“We have seen a decline in international tourism, with foreign tourists being frightened by what is happening in the region. That is why we need new European support instruments and we have called for a dedicated budget line. In terms of transport, Romania had to take over what was being transported to Ukraine. After the start of the war, freight traffic in the Port of Constanta increased by eight percent, from 33 ships a day to 50. The Romanian Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure has allocated additional funds for these new needs in the transport area, but there is also a need for European support. It’s not just the goods that matter. Solutions must also be identified for Ukrainian sailors or carriers who have nowhere to return “, explained the Social Democrat MEP, alternative rapporteur for the European budget.
