BANDUNG, RADARBANTEN.CO.ID – Bosscha Observatory ITB stated that in 2023 the earth will experience a moment of darkness because a total solar eclipse will occur. A total solar eclipse is predicted to occur on April 20, 2023.
The solar eclipse itself is a phenomenon that occurs when the position of the moon is in line with the earth and the sun so that it completely or partially obscures the earth’s view of the sun.
The moon’s shadow will fall on the earth’s position according to its trajectory, causing a moment of darkness.
Staff of the Education and Public Outreach Division of Bosscha Observatory ITB Yatny Yulianty said the solar eclipse process took place gradually as the moon moved to cover the sun little by little.
“The last rays of the sun will be seen passing through the valleys on the moon until it is completely covered in the total phase. Leaving behind the rays of the sun’s corona that sticks out from the edge of the moon after that, the moon will shift until the sun looks whole again,” he said as quoted by RADARBANTEN.CO.ID, from the official ITB website, Thursday (5/5).
Yatny further explained, in the total phase, there are some interesting things that can be observed because the intensity of sunlight decreases. Where things will look dark like a night with a full moon, and the sky in the horizon area as in the afternoon.
“Earth’s atmosphere will cool, temperatures will drop, humidity will increase, and wind speeds will change. The atmosphere will also tend to be quiet because animals such as birds, chickens, and livestock are getting ready to sleep, and nocturnal animals behave more alert, even though it is still day,” he said.
