Chicago, Ill. – Artisans from Huamantla, Tlaxcala, show two monumental and multicolored rugs with small marble stones, which are exhibited in Daley Plaza as part of the celebrations of the Week of Mexico in Chicago from May 3 to 6, reported the Consulate of Mexico in Chicago through a press release.
The tradition of handmade rugs dates back to pre-Hispanic times in Mexico.
The design of these rugs will be inspired by traditional elements from Mexico and Chicago, and show the cultural ties between both communities. Residents and visitors will have the opportunity to interact with artisans and see firsthand one of the most beautiful pieces of ephemeral art in the world.
The inauguration ceremony to celebrate the installation of the Huamantla rugs was led by the Consulate General of Mexico in Chicago on May 3 at Daley Plaza. This event had the musical participation of Juan Diego Rojas, and a sample of typical dances by the National Folkloric Ballet of Chicago.
Mexico Week in Chicago is a series of events to promote and share Mexican culture, traditions, and cuisine, as well as celebrate the presence and many contributions of the Mexican-origin community residing in Illinois. More than 2.5 million people of Mexican origin live in Illinois, representing the largest ethnic minority in the state.
