Victoria Alonso explains why America Chavez is so important to the LGBTQ+ and Latinx communities

Victoria Alonso, President, Physics and Post-Production, Visual Effects and Animation Production at Marvel Studios, and Executive Producer of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madnessrevealed that as a Latina hero who is a member of the LGBTQ+ community, it was incredibly personal to her to make sure the LGBTQ+ and Latinx communities are represented by this character.

“This character was important to me for many personal reasons, but also because it was important that we made an effort to have every child in this world represented in our universe, and she represents both the LGBTQ+ community and Latinx,” Alonso said in an interview by Christine Dinh for Marvel.com.

« [America] is a young Latina who is part of the LGBTQ+ community and has great power. Children want to see themselves represented,” Alonso said. “There’s this level of identity that becomes a big moment in a teenager’s life – seeing yourself; so as not to be invisible.
