– It’s completely meaningless. Norway cannot be the country that undermines the UN’s mandate on human rights.
Pål Nesse, Secretary General of the Norwegian Organization for Asylum Seekers (NOAS), disagrees with the FRP proposal that Norway should send Afghan asylum seekers to Rwanda.
– The logic does not hang in the balance. The FRP, which is so concerned with helping in the neighboring areas, must understand that countries like Rwanda will not have the opportunity to help in sine local areas if we send our asylum seekers to them. And then the whole asylum institute falls, Nesse adds.

Refugees to Africa
The FRP plan is as follows: Asylum centers abroad will process applications from asylum seekers who come to Norway to apply for asylum. Asylum seekers who are granted residence must stay there – for example in Rwanda. The proposal is first discussed in Aftenpostenand will be promoted in the Storting on Tuesday.
– This is a logic of discrimination. FRP says that Afghans can be sent to Rwanda, while Ukrainians can be received in Norway, says Nesse in NOAS.
– Ukrainians come from Europe?
– The continent of origin is not an argument in the UN Refugee Convention, he answers.
Rwanda ranks 160th on the UN HDI index. Norway is in first place. On average, life is 13 years shorter in Rwanda than in Norway.
Trafficking in human beings and slavery
Recognized Foreign Policy has revealed that a large number of refugees from Israel sent to Rwanda ended up with human traffickers or in slavery.
– FRP’s proposal is a complete hole in the head. Norway must take responsibility for all asylum seekers who come, especially those from Afghanistan, since we contributed to the war and the conditions they are fleeing from, says Tobias Drevland Lund (R) to Dagbladet.
– If we do not have space, is Rwanda better than Afghanistan?
– Then we must build up our capacity. The solidarity we see with the refugees from Ukraine now, we must also negotiate in equal solidarity with refugees from other countries, says the parliamentary representative from Rødt.
– I have noticed great sympathy in the FRP for refugees from Ukraine, but they do not seem to be as touchingly engaged when the refugees come from countries outside Europe, he adds.

– Less tempting
The parliamentary representative Erlend Wiborg (Frp) is promoting the proposal. He is the party’s immigration policy spokesman.
– The logic is quite simple, he says to Dagbladet.
– People who apply for asylum do so because they are on the run. The goal must then be security in anticipation of an asylum application being processed. And Norway can provide that security in a third country. Then the FRP thinks that it will be less tempting for asylum seekers who does not has a real need for protection to seek asylum in Norway, he adds.
Wiborg points out, among other things, that dangerous journeys across the Mediterranean and elsewhere can be avoided.

He also emphasizes that there should be such good security routines that the refugees should not end up in the hands of human traffickers.
– Of course, of course. This should be neat and tidy. People should be treated with respect. Unfortunately, we know that many who apply for asylum in Norway train their application, and both escape and commit crime in the meantime. We are now avoiding that problem.
– Rwanda gets that problem instead, then?
– This will be a scheme implemented in cooperation with authorities in third countries such as Rwanda.
