There are a large number of reasons why dogs can smell bad. As with other animals, each specimen has a characteristic odor that the people it lives with must get used to.
In general, two reasons can be distinguished that can explain why the smell of dogs is unpleasant. On the one hand, it may be due to nature of animals. And on the other hand, it can be a warning sign of a possible disease.
anal glands
All dogs have two anal glands on either side of the anus.which secrete a whitish or brown liquid that smells very bad, like rotten fish.
For dogs it is how they communicate with each other, hence they smell their anus when they meet other specimens in the park. If the bad smell is temporary and coincides with the moment in which the dog has met another dog, it is very likely that this is the cause.
pads
Unlike humans, who have sweat glands spread throughout the body, those of dogs are concentrated in specific parts such as the pads. In the same way that our feet can smell, their pads may also give off an unpleasant odor.
allergies
Dogs can also suffer from allergies. If so, and these affect the skin to a greater extent, it is very likely that intense scratching causes bacterial infections that cause bad odor.
Sebum
The skin of dogs is covered by sebaceous glands that generate oil to protect the dermis. Sometimes more sebum is produced than normal, which can become a greasy seborrhea. When this happens, it is normal for dogs to smell rancid.
Feeding
As in humans, what dogs eat can also affect their bodily fluids and consequently their smell. Although dogs only sweat through the pads, so it is more difficult to perceive the bad smell of sweat, some food particles remain in the saliva, and are released through the breath and urine.
Dermatitis
Dogs with wrinkled skin are much more prone to dermatitis, which can lead to ‘smelly skin’. It is important to clean the folds daily to avoid possible infections over time.
