The marine biotechnology company Ficosterra has completed the first phase of the Nutrialgae project, promoted by the United Nations Development Program (UNPD), through the Ocean Innovation Challenge (OIC) initiative for the progress of the blue economy and the SDG 14, thanks to the support of the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA) and the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (NORAD). International trials are advancing at a good pace, especially in Mexico where crops with up to 20% more productivity have already been achieved using 30% less chemical fertilization. The key has been to complement conventional fertilization with biostimulants made from marine algae, which prevent contamination of aquifers caused by phosphorus, nitrogen and potassium residues not assimilated by crops.
