JAKARTA, iNews.id – Gray hair is white hair which generally increases with age. However, there are some conditions that cause gray hair to appear earlier at a younger age.
It is known that in the hair follicles, there are pigment cells that can give color to the hair. These pigment cells will decrease with age, which occurs naturally and gives hair a grayish or white color.
However, genetic factors are one of the few factors of graying at a young age. Roughly, what other factors cause us gray hair at a young age, huh?
Reporting from Hello Sehat, here are 4 causes of young people turning gray:
1. Stress
According to a Nature Medicine study conducted on mice, there is a link between stress and the thinning of stem cells in hair follicles.
It turns out that stress can make hair turn white faster than it should be. The stress experienced will cause an imbalance in the reaction of free radicals with antioxidants which can then cause damage to our hair cells.
2. Vitamin B12 deficiency
Vitamin B12 has an important role in the growth of hair cells. Our bodies need vitamin B12, especially for red blood cells which will work to carry oxygen to cells in our bodies, including hair cells.
Lack of this vitamin is what causes us to turn gray at a young age. This is because vitamin B12 deficiency can weaken hair cells and affect the production of the pigment that gives hair its color.
