The Australian airline Qantas Airways is expected to announce a huge agreement with the aircraft manufacturer Airbus for A350-1000 aircraft that will be able to fly uninterrupted between Sydney and London, reports Reuters and refers to sources in the industry.
The deal will be worth billions of dollars. It is expected to be unveiled from a hangar in Australian Sydney on Monday, and will bring Qantas one step closer to the goal of launching what will be a record-breaking direct flight of close to 20 hours by mid-2025, according to the news agency.
Qantas chief Alan Joyce has previously described it as “the Holy Grail” to be able to operate the Sydney-London route with direct flights.
Today, the route takes almost a whole day, and it includes one stopover. When the route was established in 1947, the journey took 58 hours and included a number of stopovers, according to the news agency.
Qantas has been talking about direct flight plans for the Sydney-London route for years already, but the project has in recent years been postponed due to the corona pandemic.
