The mud and rust-covered cannons were discovered by accident. An excavator scooping up sludge from the riverbed last year as part of a project related to the Savannah, grabs one of the cannons with his metal jaws. The team will soon bring out two more.
Archaeologists have suggested the cannons are remnants of a Confederate warship discovered a few years earlier in the area, said Andrea Farmer, an archaeologist with the Army Corps of Engineers. “They are in remarkably good condition. Many of them were ‘buried’ in clay and covered with mud and debris that protected them,” Farmer said.
