Hepatitis is usually caused by one of several infectious hepatitis viruses, but these have not been found in infected children. Jaundice, diarrhea and abdominal pain are some of the reported symptoms.
One theory being investigated by the UK’s Health Security Agency is that lack of exposure to common adenoviruses usually causes stomach upset and colds. The virus during the coronavirus pandemic has caused more severe illness among children. Of the 53 cases tested in the UK, about 40 or 75 per cent showed signs of adenovirus infection.

Public Health Scotland director Jim McMenamin told Reuters work was underway to understand whether the adenovirus had mutated to cause more severe disease, or whether it could cause problems “concurrently” with other viruses, including possible Sars-CoV-2, the virus that causes Covid-19.
British officials said there was “no link” between this case and the Covid-19 vaccine, as no children with hepatitis received the vaccine.
Andrea Ammon, director at the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control in Stockholm, said that so far there was no link between cases and no link to travel. “The disease appears in previously healthy children,” Ammon said.
