During Barry Manilow’s performance, a mega concert in New York had to be interrupted due to thunderstorms. Then it was canceled entirely.

Lightning and thunder caused the first disruption during Barry Manilow’s (78, “Mandy”) performance at “We Love NYC: The Homecoming Concert” on Saturday night (August 21) in New York City. A little later, the mega event in Central Park had to be canceled completely – because of the approaching hurricane “Henri”.

As the “New York Post” writes, among others, Manilow was singing his 1978 hit “Can’t Smile Without You” when, at a little after 7:30 p.m., after almost two and a half hours of live music, the concert-goers were asked to “remove their vehicles and protected areas outside the event area” to go. A little later, the complete cancellation of the five-hour free concert was announced through loudspeakers.

Mayor Bill de Blasio pushed for continuation

New York Mayor Bill de Blasio (60), for whom the event embodied the rebirth of his city, exuded optimism during the interruption, saying: “Everyone has to go to a safe place for a short time because of thunder and lightning and then we will continue the concert.” According to the report, he urged the New York City Police Department to allow the show to continue from 10 p.m. to midnight. However, the persistent storm made this plan impossible.

At the first mega event after the outbreak of the corona pandemic, which was broadcast live on television and for which almost 60,000 mostly vaccinated visitors were expected, numerous other superstars were to be on stage alongside Barry Manilow. Among other things, the appearances of Bruce Springsteen (71, “Dancing in the Dark”), Elvis Costello (66), Patti Smith (74) and the Colombian superstar Maluma (27) now literally “fell into the water”.

Category one hurricane Henri is expected to make its first landfall on Sunday (August 22) east of New York City on the US Atlantic coast.
