The French women’s hockey team lost 3-2 after extra time against Austria in Angers during the D1 World Cup and will play its rise in the elite against Norway on Saturday.
Bad operation for the Blues! The players of the French women’s hockey team hoped to approach the match against Norway on Saturday by being at the top of group A of the D1 World Cup (the second division of hockey), but they will finally be tied on points with the Scandinavians. After beating Slovakia and the Netherlands (the two weakest teams in the group), the French indeed lost 3-2 after extra time against Austria. If the Blues opened the scoring by Léa Parment in the 15th minute thanks to an error by the goalkeeper, the Austrians came back in front by scoring two goals in less than three minutes at the start of the second third, by Anna Meixner (21st) and Theresa Schafzahl (24th). But the French did not give up and Chloé Aurard, the tournament’s top scorer (3 goals), equalized 3’10 from the end of regulation time (2-2) on a pass from Estelle Duvin. It was therefore necessary to play an extension, and it was Austria who managed to score after only fifteen seconds, thanks to Schafzahl who therefore offered himself a double.
Everything is still possible
Austria thus signs its third victory after extra time in three games and therefore has only six points, while Norway and France, with two victories in regulation time and a defeat after extra time, have seven. The Austrians can therefore still qualify if they beat Slovakia in regulation time and the winner between France and Norway is decided after extra time. On the other hand, if there is a winner in regulation time between France and Norway, it is this team that will go up in the elite of world hockey.
