Cologne | Something’s brewing…

The discounter ALDI SÜD does not seem to rest. After a few weeks ago in Cologne, a planned establishment of a works council ended in riots and had to be broken up by the police.

Friday the 13th as a deadline for demonstrators against ALDI SÜD

The initiators released a statement as an announcement.

“Action against labor injustice calls for protests in front of and in ALDI branches on Friday, May 13, 2022,” it says, “We have started planning and coordinating actions throughout Germany and are calling on all wage earners and democratically minded citizens* inside to participate. #FREITAG13 is intended to put pressure on the ALDI brand. The only protection that works council founders have at ALDI is currently the public.”

When asked by report-k, the company had taken the following position on the works council issue: “ALDI SOUTH already has works councils in some regional companies in the ALDI SOUTH area. The cooperation between the management and the works councils is constructive. In addition, all of the more than 43,400 employees have access to a trusted lawyer as an alternative to internal conflict resolution.”

Apparently, that’s not enough for many employees. According to information from report-k, the chaos of the works council election in Bickendorf on April 14 could still have legal repercussions.
