A 350-meter-wide giant asteroid will cross Earth this Thursday

The asteroid will penetrate Earth’s orbit at a blistering speed of 37,400 km/hour.

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, WASHINGTON — A “potentially dangerous” asteroid that may be twice the size Empire State Building will glide past Earth, Thursday (28/4/2022). According to the American Space Agency (NASA), the asteroid named 418135 (2008 AG33) has an estimated diameter of between 350 and 780 meters.

The asteroid will penetrate Earth’s orbit at a blistering speed of 37,400 km/hour. Reported from SciencealertWednesday (27/4/2022), the asteroid is expected to glide past our planet without risk of impact.

At its closest point, the asteroid-moving at more than 30 times the speed of sound. The asteroid will be within about 3.2 million kilometers from Earth, which is roughly eight times the average distance between Earth and the Moon. This may sound like a huge gap, but by cosmic standards, it’s actually a stone’s throw away.

NASA marks any space object within 193 million km of Earth as a “near-Earth object”. Any fast-moving object within 7.5 million km falls into the “potentially hazardous” category.
