It’s official, Elon Musk is buying Twitter

Already a shareholder with 9.2% of the capital of the social network, the American billionaire, Elon Musk has formalized his takeover of Twitter for 44 billion dollars. The social network’s board of directors finally accepted his offer on Monday, April 25, after resisting his attacks.

The new owner of Twitter

The soap opera was short-lived: three weeks after he bought his first shares in the company and ten days after his takeover proposal, Elon Musk ended up taking control of the social network Twitter. After some reluctance, the main shareholders finally gave the green light to the privatization of the social network. The richest man in the world has just offered Twitter to $44 billion. It goes to show that everyone has a price.

Many changes

However, the takeover raises very many questionsboth economic and political. Elon Musk has made no secret of his intentions to take Twitter out of the stock marketin order to be able to provide major changes which he considers essential to his survival. The 50-year-old billionaire says he is buying the company on behalf of freedom of speech. From new moderation rules, relaxation of censorship, a more transparent algorithm…the new owner has given some hints about the changes he wants to make.

More flexible moderation

As a first step, Elon Musk wants to adopt a more flexible approach in terms of moderationconsidering in particular that the permanent banishment of Internet users who have violated the rules of use of Twitter is not the solution. This does not however mean that Donald Trump for example, which has been excluded since January 2021, will make a comeback. Even so, Elon Musk did not hide his sympathy for the former president of the United States, he never publicly said he wanted to intercede on his behalf if he managed to take control of Twitter. For his part, Donald Trump has told the channel on Monday Fox News that he does not plan “return to Twitter” but rather « stay on Truth Social »the new network he created.
