Just a golden boy. And not only Julius Lavický, but also Jakub Štáfek. His brand new act Vyšehrad: Fylm broke records during the second weekend after the premiere. According to official data from the Union of Film Distributors, it has already been visited by less than 350,000 spectators and the total revenue reaches sixty million crowns.

If Czech filmmakers were worried that after the covid era, viewers would be afraid to return to crowded cinemas, they no longer had to worry. The proof is the number of visitors Vyšehrad: Fylmu with Jakub Štáfek in the lead role. Numbers that are publicly available on the web Union of Film Distributorshe speaks clearly. In less than 14 days, the film was visited in cinemas by an incredible 344,549 paying spectators, who together spent 59,106,332 crowns on tickets, of which 18,121,752 crowns in the second weekend alone.
The attendance of the Hollywood blockbuster also testifies to the fantastic number Fantastic Animals: Dumbledore’s Secret. In two times, it attracted 226,244 spectators to Czech cinemas and the film earned almost 39 million crowns. Batman and Robert Pattinson in the lead roles are much worse off, earning slightly over 38 million crowns in 11 weeks in Czech cinemas.
How money is divided
But it must be added that we are talking about gross sales, not profit. Just to give you an idea: fifty percent is automatically retained by the distributor. Part of the money is also transferred to the cinematography fund, which then finances some Czech films. However, it can be concluded that the producers of the film Vyšehrad: Fylm can already look forward to a beautiful thirty million crowns, and the amount will most likely increase even further.
If we Štáfkův We likened the directorial debut to other similarly successful Czech films, we would have to choose the films Angel of the Lord 2 or Women in Running, which was seen in cinemas by a similar number of paying audiences during the first weekend. To date, 1.2 and 1.5 million viewers have seen these films in cinemas.
Good prospects for Vysehrad
If Vyšehrad: Fylm achieves at least the success of the less visited of its predecessors and attracts 1.2 million spectators to cinemas, sales will reach almost 206 million crowns. In the case of one and a half million visitors, gross sales would exceed 257 million crowns and producers would receive half of it. But we are already ahead of it, although Jakub Štáfek’s directorial debut is well on its way to that.
The question is how much of the total profit Štáfek himself will receive. While in Hollywood the rule is that directors receive a percentage of the profit, in the Czech lands we still hold a fixed salary for the work, which in most cases is advantageous for directors, but in this case Štáfek would certainly not despise five percent of the profit. Given that without him, such a success would most likely never come, every crown from the film’s royalties and earnings is definitely deserved for him. It is thanks to him that Vyšehrad has become such a phenomenon.
