New York City Mayor Eric Adams is expected to release his executive budget for fiscal year 2023 on Tuesday and discuss his first 100 days in office. He is also expected to outline his vision for the city’s continued recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Democrat will also talk about other key investments.
The mayor’s first 100 days have been marred by a number of challenges, including a rise in homelessness, rising violent crime and violence across the city, and attempts at an economic recovery following the consequences of the coronavirus pandemic.
PUBLIC SECURITY
Public safety has taken center stage since Adams made it a key part of his agenda.
However, the New York City Police released the city’s crime statistics for the month of March and announced an overall crime rate increase of 36.5% compared to the same period last year, but a drop in the homicides.
While crime overall has increased, Police Commissioner Keechant Sewell said last month that certain initiatives have been successful.
In March, the NYPD said the first three months of 2022 were defined by “successful eliminations of violent subjects and the seizure of caches of illegal firearms, including traditional weapons and emerging firearms known as “ghost guns” that can be 3-D printed at home”. The Police department also began recruiting more than 400 officers for the new NYPD Neighborhood Safety Teams in January 2022.
Sewell also emphasized that the murder resolution rate is the highest rate of any year-end resolution rate in the modern era of compstat.
Even as statistics show that murders are down, New Yorkers are still angered by the killings of innocent bystanders, including the recent death of a 61-year-old woman who was walking down a Fordham Heights street when she unexpectedly found herself trapped in a crossfire on his way home from work. Juana Esperanza Soriano De-Perdomo died after being hit by a bullet in her back.
Last month, a 12-year-old boy died after being shot while eating in a car with relatives in Brooklyn. The murder of both the 12-year-old boy and the 61-year-old grandmother has given rise to many calls for change.
The Adams administration also launched a public safety initiative in February for the city’s subway system, which has been plagued by crime and aggressive behavior in recent months, reaching its climax on April 12 when at least 10 passengers Brooklyn subway trains were shot by a suspect wearing a gas mask and construction vest who blew two smoke canisters into the train car to distract the rush hour crowd before opening fire.
HOMELESS PEOPLE IN NYC
In addition, Mayor Adams has also focused on addressing homelessness throughout the city, including by eliminating hundreds of encampments. The Democrats’ initiative mirrors similar reforms in other liberal metropolises that had previously tolerated the encampments.
Homeless advocates denounced the mayor’s move as ruthless and were frustrated that Mayor Adams took action without releasing a comprehensive and compassionate plan to address the issues that contribute to homelessness.
The mayor has continued to defend his plan, while asking critics to join him by going to homeless sites in person before judging the city’s effort.
He has previously said he wants to clean up parts of the city that are “dirty” and “unsafe.”
