The Center de services scolaire des Patriotes (CSSP), the City of Carignan and the Ministry of Education today marked the start of work for the construction of the new elementary school in Carignan.
For the occasion, Luc Lapointe, General Manager of the CSSP, Patrick Marquès, Mayor of Carignan, and Jean-François Roberge, Member of Parliament for Chambly and Minister of Education, met on the site of the future school to proceed with the first official shovel of soil. Before the shovelful, the three men had made, in turn, a brief speech at the CSSP, in Saint-Bruno-de-Montarville.
Due to a lack of places in Carignan schools, several families in the municipality have to send their children to schools in Chambly. With the arrival of the new primary school, the CSSP will have to review the distribution plan for students in the schools concerned. The exercise has not yet been carried out at this stage of the process. It will be done in the fall of 2023. Despite the arrival of the new school, the director general of the CSSP is not able to affirm that all Carignan students at the primary level will no longer have to attend a school in Chambly soil. . “Certainly it will reduce the number,” he says.
Ventilation system
A report by the group of scientific and technical experts on the Ventilation and transmission of COVID-19 in schools and healthcare settings was tabled by Quebec on January 8, 2021. The report in question put into perspective the importance of maintaining a good supply of fresh air in indoor environments in order to dilute the aerosols emitted by people and which are likely to contain the SARS-CoV-2 virus, the virus at the origin of the COVID-19 pandemic. Depending on the type of building, this contribution is made through natural ventilation through windows, mechanical ventilation or a combination of the two. The pandemic has brought to light inadequate ventilation systems in some schools in Quebec. The data collected in the rooms was used to determine if corrective actions were necessary to increase the renewal of the air in a classroom room. The new school in Carignan will be equipped with mechanical ventilation. “The school meets all recent and innovative construction standards, both in terms of mechanics and architecture,” says Dominic Arpin, director of the CSSP’s material resources department.
The architecture of the building will be modern and largely fenestrated so that the common areas are full of natural light. The school will also sport a brand new architectural identity highlighting accents of blue and materials from Quebec, mainly wood and aluminum. The use of wood as the structure for the community block and as interior cladding as well as the exterior views of the agricultural landscape demonstrate a sensitive approach to biophilia.
The new school
The new school, with an area of more than 7,100 m2, will accommodate a total of 32 classes, eight for preschool and 24 for elementary school, three childcare facilities, a motor skills room and a double gymnasium. It will incorporate innovative principles into its layout, including the grouping of classrooms by household. Each household will consist of four classroom spaces and two interclass spaces allowing for shared, open and flexible learning spaces that encourage co-teaching.
An amount of more than $52 million was granted for the realization of this project within the framework of the Plan québécois des infrastructures of the government of Quebec. According to the established schedule, the delivery of the project is planned for the winter of 2024 in order to allow a return to school in September 2024.
