The first fully private manned mission to the International Space Station (ISS) was completed on Monday.
A SpaceX Crew Dragon capsule, dangling from four parachutes, exploded in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Florida at around 7:08 PM Belgian time after an (extended) mission of seventeen days. On board were four people, including three space tourists: former Spanish-American NASA astronaut Michael Lopez Allegria, American entrepreneur Larry Connor, Canadian investor Mark Pathy and Dutch-Israeli entrepreneur and pilot Eytan Stibbe.
The four have meanwhile left the fished-up capsule. They had left for the spacemeccano from Cape Canaveral in Florida on April 8. Due to bad weather in the landing area, the return was delayed several times. The first mission of the company Axiom Space is immediately over.
It undertook the first fully private manned mission to the ISS SpaceX, for both the Falcon-9 launch vehicle and the Crew Dragon Endeavor pod. The three entrepreneurs are said to have paid approximately $55 million each for their trip. Initially it would last eight days. Besides admiring our planet, they also did scientific experiments. According to Lopez-Alegria, they do not consider themselves space tourists. Lopez-Alegria has previously flown with the space shuttle and the Russian Soyuz. He spent a total of 275 days in space.
