The former First Minister of Scotland is one of the officials who has thrown cold water on a claim made by the president Donald Trump about the late actor Sean Connery.
Scotland and much of the world is mourning the loss of a great spirit. Sean Connery’s contribution and his life’s work were immense, real and enduring, and everyone with a bit of class is reflecting on that today, Alex Salmon , who served as First Minister of Scotland from 2007 to 2014, said in a statement. Tributes are great from all sources, but this is not the time to tweet or respond to silly claims.
Following Connery’s death on Saturday, Trump tweeted a tribute to the original 007 star that included a boast about Trump’s golf estate in Aberdeenshire, Scotland.
Legendary 007 actor Sean Connery has moved on to even greener streets. He was quite a guy, and tough character. I was having a really hard time getting approvals for a big development in Scotland when Sean stepped in and yelled, ‘Let him build the damn thing,’ Trump. claimed On twitter. That was all she needed, everything went smoothly from there. He was so respected and respected in Scotland and beyond that years of future confusion were avoided. Sean was a great actor and an even greater man. Sincere condolences to his family!
However, as with many of Trump’s remarks, the comment does not tell the whole story. While local government officials initially denied Trump the allocations to build the course and resort, the Scottish government overturned the ruling in 2008. At the time, Connery was cited like praising the decision. During tough economic times, this is a huge vote of confidence in Scotland’s tourism industry and our ability to rise to the challenge, he said. I hope to see a new gem in the North East that is good for Aberdeenshire and good for Scotland.
But according to Martin Ford , the Abdereenshire official who chaired the local committee that initially excluded Trump from development plans, Connery’s words reportedly had no impact on changing attitudes. Mr. Connery was not involved in the due process that led to the granting of planning permission for a golf course in Menie, he said in a statement to The Guardian . He did not submit a letter of representation to the council, did not appear at the planning hearing or the local public consultation.
Still, Trump has frequently cited Connery’s positive commentary on the course. In 2010, when construction of the field began, Trump allegedly said From Connery, Sean was in New York recently and I was with him. He came out of nowhere and strongly backed this up. First of all, I loved him as James Bond, my favorite James Bond of all time. But when Sean Connery was strongly in favor of this course, it had a big impact.
In 2018, he reportedly told a similar story to the former UK Prime Minister Theresa May .
