Doe Maar singer Henny Vrienten (73) passed away

The funeral will be held privately. The family asks for peace and privacy and will not make any further announcements, Mojo reports.

Vrienten was a composer as well as a guitarist and pianist, but above all he was known as the front man of Doe Maar. The band was formed in 1978. Vrienten only joined two years later, as Piet Dekker’s successor.

The band unleashed a real rage in the Netherlands with their typical Doe Maar sound – a mix of ska, punk and reggae, among others. Songs like Doris Day, Is This All, The Bomb, 1 Night Alone and Pa became big hits.

But the excessive popularity made the group, for the longest time in the occupation of Vrienten, Ernst Jansz, Jan Hendriks and Jan Pijnenburg, finally decide to stop in 1984. Hysterical teenage fans reacted with defeat.

In 2000, the men reunited and made a comeback with sixteen concerts in Ahoy. After that, more concert series followed and they toured festivals and theaters.

At the end of September, Doe Maar announced that the farewell tour would be canceled due to Vrienten’s illness. The tour had previously been postponed a number of times due to the corona lockdown. The last time the band performed across the country was in 2018. They celebrated their 40th anniversary with the club tour There NIX changes.
