Greenpeace activists have chained to a Russian oil tanker on Monday in an attempt to prevent it from being delivered to Norway, the organization said.
The tanker is currently anchored at Exxon Mobil’s oil terminal about 70 kilometers south of Oslo, according to Marine Traffic.
Activists approached the tanker in a small boat and chained to the tanker’s anchor chain, hoping to prevent the cargo from being unloaded, Greenpeace said the ship was believed to have 95,000 tonnes of oil on board.
Frode Pleim, a spokesman for Greenpeace, said oil had contributed not only to climate crises but also to wars and conflicts.
“I am shocked that Norway is acting as a free port for Russian oil, which we know finances Putin’s war,” Pleim said.
Greenpeace called on the Norwegian government to ban imports of Russian fossil fuels and said Exxon Mobil’s Norwegian company Esso should also cancel all agreements on fossil fuel imports in light of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
Esso agreed to buy Russian oil before the war and has no plans to continue buying oil from Russia, a company spokesman told Dagbladet.
