After Activision – Ubisoft reportedly looking for buyers

Ubisoft

Ever since Activision was bought by Microsoft, “acquisition” seems to be the most popular word in the international gaming industry. Studios have been bought up left and right in recent years.

In recent months, Sony has acquired Bungie while Microsoft has absorbed Activision. And the news goes on. Just this week, PlayStation announced a new acquisition, but now it’s Ubisoft that’s getting into the acquisition ring.

As Bloomberg reports, the company behind Assassin’s Creed and Far Cry is showing interest in a takeover. Insiders (who wish to remain anonymous) have told Bloomberg that a number of private equity firms have expressed interest in acquiring Ubisoft. They have not yet started serious negotiations, but initial talks are said to have already taken place.

Additionally, sources recently confirmed to Kotaku that Ubisoft is “in has worked closely with several outside consulting firms over the last few years to audit various areas of the business“to prepare for a possible sale. It remains uncertain whether Ubisoft’s main players are on board.

Ubisoft has several big upcoming releases under its belt, including Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora, the reboot of Prince of Persia: Sands of Time, Assassin’s Creed Infinity, and an as yet untitled Star Wars game, so in the event of a takeover, there’s a juicy portfolio to grab is near.

However, the whole thing has not yet been officially confirmed. Ubisoft themselves recently told news website Kotaku that they “do not comment on rumors and speculation”.

Ubisoft was founded in 1986 by five brothers from the Guillemot family. The company’s shares took a hit over the past year amid concerns about delayed launches and lower productivity relative to other companies. However, that does not diminish interest in a possible takeover.
