Zlatan Ibrahimovic made a comeback for Milan when he jumped in against Lazio in the middle of the second half on Sunday night. After Ibrahimovic hijacked an opponent and received a yellow card, it looked like the match would end 1-1, which had meant a heavy loss of points for Milan in the title fight.
Then Ibrahimovic stepped into the action in earnest. The 40-year-old Swede stayed ahead in the penalty area and nodded the ball to Sandro Tonali, who pushed in the winning goal in the 92nd minute, after which wild joy erupted. Milan now tops the table two points ahead of Inter, who, however, have one match fewer played.
At the age of 40, six months and 21 days, Ibrahimovic is also historically the oldest player to assist in Serie A. He broke Francesco Totti’s previous record of 40 years, four months and 23 days.
After the match, 21-year-old Sandro Tonali was asked what it is like to have Zlatan Ibrahimovic in his team. The answer?
– It is unique to have a player like him in his team, so we have to make the best of him. It was his nod (assist) that changed the match tonight. From “Ibra” and younger players like myself, we all just have to keep going now, Tonali tells Dazn.
Milan are now seriously challenging Inter for Scudetton, but Sandro Tonali does not want to float away in his mind.
– We need to take one match at a time. We came here tonight and no one but ourselves and our fans believed in us. We lead without hearing anyone say that Milan leads, even though we are a strong team. But we are used to it now, he says.
