Fire great hit Gembrong Market, East Jakarta. The Fire Department recorded the number of fatalities at 45 families or around 1,000 people.
“450 families, 1,000 people (5 RT) are affected,” said Head of East Jakarta Fire Department, Gatot Sulaiman, in his statement, Monday (25/4/2022).
The fire destroyed 400 buildings. Losses are estimated at Rp 1.5 billion.
“400 buildings (houses & shops) RT 2,3,4,5 and 6 RW 01, the loss is estimated at around Rp 1.5 billion,” said Gatot.
Suspected Electrical Shortage
It is suspected that the Gembrong Market fire was caused by an electrical short coming from a resident’s house.
“The electric short circuit started from Mrs. Rawinah’s house on the 2nd floor,” said Gatot.
Gatot said the owner of the house immediately shouted for help. However, the fire quickly caught on because many of the surrounding buildings were made of wood.
“The owner of the house shouted that there was a fire and residents tried to extinguish the fire, but the fire quickly grew and spread to the surroundings because the surrounding buildings were made of wood,” he said.
The fire at Gembrong Market was reported to have occurred on Sunday (24/4) at 21.06 WIB. The fire can then be localized at 23.00 WIB.
A total of 26 fire engines were dispatched to the location. The personnel who were deployed were 130 people.
