Düsseldorf’s ex-OB irritates with trivializing statements about the atrocity in Butscha

In a blog post, Thomas Geisel, the former mayor of Düsseldorf, irritated with his statements about the war crimes in Butscha. The SPD politician criticizes Melnyk’s and Selenskyj’s genocide rhetoric and speaks of trivializing – including the victims of the bombing in Dresden.

Düsseldorf’s former mayor Thomas Geisel (SPD) caused criticism at the weekend with a blog post on the Ukraine war.

Geisel wrote about the war crimes in the Ukrainian city of Bucha near Kyiv: “According to Ukrainian information, 410 civilians fell victim to the atrocities in Bucha. Of course, every civilian casualty in a war is a tragedy and one too many Doesn’t genocidal rhetoric ultimately trivialize the war crimes of Srebrenica, My Lai and Babiyar (Babyn Jar), to name just a few, and perhaps also the night bombing in Dresden, which allegedly killed 30,000 people?”

The blog post titled “That’s enough, Mr. Melnyk“, which was published several days ago, caused criticism over the weekend – after the Ukrainian ambassador Andriy Melnyk, among others, reacted on Twitter.

Another SPD politician is critical of Ukraine

The CDU politician Ruprecht Polenz had previously tweeted: “First Schröder, then Schwesig, now Geisel. I would have thought it impossible that a leading SPD politician like the former mayor of Düsseldorf would comment in this way on the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine .”

The CDU politician also reported on Twitter that the ex-mayor visited the Russian Consul General a week before the war began and was there praised for “his pro-Russian services”.

Geisel was Mayor of Düsseldorf from 2014 to 2020. In 2020, the CDU politician Stephan Keller was elected mayor.
