WHO Calls 1 Child Died Due to Hepatitis ‘Mysterious’

The World Health Organization (WHO) said there was at least one case of child death due to ‘mysterious’ hepatitis, Saturday (23/4/2022). At least 169 children from 12 countries have been reported to have hepatitis for no apparent reason.

The WHO released the figures as health authorities around the world are investigating a mysterious increase in cases of severe hepatitis, particularly in children.

Quoted from Reuters, on Thursday (21/4), WHO said cases of acute hepatitis of unknown origin had been reported in the UK, the United States, Spain, Israel, Denmark, Ireland, the Netherlands, Italy, Norway, France, Romania and Belgium. It said 114 of the 169 cases were in the UK.

The cases reported occurred in children aged one month to 16 years. 17 children to require a liver transplant. However, regarding the death report, there is no detailed information as well as the location of the death case.

The WHO said the flu virus, commonly known as adenovirus, had been detected in at least 74 cases. COVID-19 infection was identified in 20 of the tested patients, 19 cases were detected with COVID-19 and adenovirus coinfection.

WHO is currently monitoring the situation, working with UK health authorities and other member states and partners.

Previously, the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) also gave a national warning to doctors to watch out for hepatitis symptoms in children that may be related to the flu virus.
